Manual for labelling and registration of edible oils, shea butter, fat spreads (margarine), and blended spreads in Nigeria

The Global Shea Alliance wants to promote the use of shea butter as an edible oil, fat spreads (margarine) and blended spreads in West Africa in order to enhance the many nutritional qualities of this product. To this end, it wishes to help producers in mastering the regulations governing the edible oil, fat spreads (margarine) and blended spreads sector in Nigeria. This Manual for shea butter producers in Nigeria provides an update on the standards and regulations relating to edible oils, fat spreads (margarine) and blended spreads in this country. In particular, it provides information on:
• Registration procedures;
• Labeling and packaging requirements;
• Safety and quality criteria, tolerated levels of contaminants, etc.

The use of this manual is expected to improve the quality of production and consumption of shea butter as edible oil, fat spreads (margarine) and blended spreads, help protect consumers, as well as reap the benefits in the export market.

This manual has been published as part of the Supporting the Inclusive Commercial Development of the Shea Value Chain program funded by the Enhanced Integrated Framework. The initiative seeks to stimulate pro-poor growth in Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Togo by expanding demand for value-added shea products, supporting small businesses to access international markets, and improving trade-related incomes for women collectors and processors.
